Eight Chihuahuas Rescued from Filthy Conditions by Detroit Pit Crew
Detroit Pit Crew founder Theresa Sumpter was horrified when she entered a home on Lichfield on Detroit’s west side and found eight Chihuahuas living in filthy conditions on Tuesday. The police conducted a welfare check when they hadn’t heard from the owner for three days and took the owner to the hospital. Volunteers Eric McCombs, a Detroit police officer, and Sumpter rescued the dogs. Here’s what happened.

Describing the scene, Sumpter said, “When we got inside, it was horrifying.” She said it seemed like the person who owned the dogs may have been too sick to care for them. The dogs appeared to have been living in cages in a dark basement filled with cobwebs and feces. They had no food or water, and there were dry bowls.

“Neglected Chihuahuas Receive Love and Care from Detroit Pit Crew”
Based on paperwork and awards found in the home, the owner of the dogs may have been a breeder. However, someone had already removed the person from the home by the time the rescue team arrived. Some of the dogs were social and friendly, while others required additional love and care. The dogs were in generally good health, but testing was needed to confirm this. The rescue team provided blankets, food, water, love, and treats to the dogs and placed them in foster homes.
The “pure neglect” that McCombs witnessed left him heartbroken, and he stated that the smell and what they saw were beyond words. The rescue team took the dogs to a vet to receive proper medical attention. Sumpter assured the public that the dogs were safe and would be given the love and care they deserved from now on.
