As a professional writer who struggles to keep his dog from eating the vacuum cleaner, I am amazed by Demi Moore's tiny Chihuahua Pilaf and her high-society life.

Most of these stories start the same way. A small dog, a specific street, a moment the family did not see coming.

As a professional writer who spends a significant portion of his life trying to convince his dog not to eat the vacuum cleaner, I am always comforted to see that Hollywood celebrities have their own complex canine relationships. For example, Hollywood star Demi Moore has a Chihuahua named Pilaf who is roughly the size of a standard can of soup but has a busier social calendar than I do. According to an alert reader who sent me a West End theater clipping, this tiny dog recently attended a production of Shakespeare's classic tragedy in London.

I am not making this up.

Pilaf, who weighs approximately 1.5 pounds (which is roughly the weight of a decent-sized potato), did not just attend the show. She was reportedly deeply moved by Spider-Man actor Tom Holland’s stirring performance as Romeo Montague at the Duke of York's Theatre. While thousands of starstruck human fans were lining up outside on Martin's Lane, Pilaf was sitting comfortably inside, likely in a designer sling, evaluating the dramatic nuances of Elizabethan dialogue.

A Highly Cultured Chihuahua on the West End

According to Moore, Pilaf is a constant travel partner and a dedicated patron of the arts. They have traveled together to the French Open, toured the galleries of the Louvre, and attended multiple Broadway productions. Their recent trip to London to see Jamie Lloyd’s modern-day vision of Romeo and Juliet is simply the latest stop on Pilaf's ongoing international cultural tour.

"She recently saw Tom Holland in Romeo and Juliet in London," Moore said in a recent interview, which was eagerly shared by theater fans. "She was quite moved. She thought the performance was extraordinary, as it was."

I have spent roughly five years trying to teach my own Chihuahua to sit on command, and his usual response is to look at me with an expression of deep, clinical boredom. Meanwhile, Pilaf is in London, sitting through three hours of Shakespearean blank verse, and concluding that the Spider-Man actor’s dramatic register was EXTRAORDINARY.

But behind the high-society glamour and the West End ticket frenzy, there is a very real testament to how deeply toy breeds bond with their humans, tagging along into spaces where dogs rarely tread. Small dogs have a unique capacity to adapt to their owner's routine, whether that routine involves walking in a suburban park or attending high-profile theatrical premieres in London.

Managing the West End Stage Door Frenzy

Tom Holland's West End run has generated immense excitement among theatergoers. In February, more than 60,000 eager fans scrambled to secure seats, causing the entire run to sell out in less than two hours. Tickets are currently reselling on secondary markets for around £300 each, drawing comparisons to the high-demand frenzy of Taylor Swift’s Eras tour.

Because of the massive crowds gathering outside the venue each night, theater officials recently announced that Holland would not be signing autographs or taking selfies at the stage door. This decision, implemented to ensure public safety, was fully supported by the Westminister Council.

"Managing crowds and public space access is the responsibility of each theatre," a council spokesman said in an official statement. "Where there are safety issues, we work closely with the venues and local police to provide additional support."

Practical Etiquette for Cultured Canine Companions

While Pilaf has mastered the art of quiet theater attendance, most of us have dogs that would react to a dramatic Shakespearean monologue by barking hysterically at the actors. If you are planning to travel with your toy breed or introduce them to public spaces, it is essential to follow basic training guidelines to ensure safety and comfort.

If you are traveling with a toy breed, follow these standard steps:

  • Use a Secure Sling or Carrier: A small chest sling, similar to the one Moore uses for Pilaf, keeps your dog secure and prevents them from being stepped on in crowded spaces.
  • Desensitize to Crowds: Gradually introduce your dog to busy environments, starting with quiet outdoor cafes before attempting indoor venues. Using positive reinforcement and teach your dog a calm settle protocols is highly recommended.
  • Monitor Physical Comfort: Toy breeds have difficulty regulating their body temperature in drafty spaces. Always carry a small blanket and monitor their Chihuahua feeding guidelines to ensure their nutritional needs are met on the road.

My own Chihuahua, Pumpkin, recently watched me open a bill for dental work and was completely unmoved. I assume he thought my performance lacked the dramatic intensity of Tom Holland, or possibly he was just waiting for a piece of cheese. Pumpkin is currently sitting on my desk, staring intensely at a spot on the wall, possibly evaluating the subtext of the paint color.
