Most of these stories start the same way. A small dog, a specific street, a moment the family did not see coming.

My Chihuahua mix, who is roughly the size of a standard eggplant but possesses the ego of a Roman emperor, has a new best friend. His name is Dexter, and he is a Great Dane who is approximately the size of a suburban ranch home. According to an alert reader who sent me a viral TikTok link, this exact scenario is currently playing out on the internet. A tiny, frisky two-month-old Chihuahua named Pete (who is technically a Chihuahua and Chinese Crested mix) has managed to completely dominate Dexter.

I am not making this up.

Pete is a Chihuahua and Chinese Crested mix, which means he is mostly hairless except for a few spectacular tufts of white fur on his head that make him look like a mad scientist who has just experienced a lab accident. Dexter, on the other hand, has enough sleek black fur to cover several Chihuahuas, and a tail that could easily double as a lethal weapon if he gets excited in a room filled with coffee tables. Pete has decided that Dexter is not a giant predatory carnivore, but rather a highly convenient, slightly drooly toy holder. The video shows Dexter lying on the floor, his massive chin resting on his paws, looking like a tired corporate executive who has spent five hours in a PowerPoint presentation about database optimization. Meanwhile, Pete is leaping around his nose, chewing on a plush toy that is approximately three times larger than his own head.

The Delicate Logistics of Opposite Play

At some point in the video, Dexter ends up holding the plush toy in his jaws, not to eat it, but simply to keep it steady while Pete yanks on the other end. The look on the Great Dane's face is classic. It is the kind of expression that says, "I am so bored out of my skull, but if this is what we have to do to keep the peace, I am in."

But underneath the absolute absurdity of their physical mismatch, there is a quiet, steady lesson about how dogs connect without boundaries. It shows that companionship is not a measurement of size. The gentle giant and the tiny bundle of energy have formed a bond that is entirely delightful to watch, even if my own dog is currently snarling at a stray leaf on the porch.

My own Chihuahua, Pumpkin, has a similar size discrepancy when compared to the neighborhood cat, a massive ginger beast named Barnaby who weighs approximately fifteen pounds and does not care about Pumpkin's opinions. Pumpkin regularly stands at the sliding glass door and screams at Barnaby, convinced that his six-pound voice is a terrifying force of nature. Barnaby just blinks and continues cleaning his ears, which is the ultimate cat insult.

For pet owners attempting to combine large and small dogs under one roof, the process requires some actual planning. While Dexter and Pete make it look like a natural cooperative agreement, mixing these two size categories can go comically wrong very quickly. To help prevent your giant breed from accidentally flattening your toy breed, you need to establish clear house rules.

First, supervised introductions are mandatory. Keep both dogs on a leash, allow them to sniff each other calmly, and do not let the large dog assume the small dog is a squeaky toy. Reward calm behavior with immediate treats.

Additionally, you must provide safe spaces. Your small dog needs easy access under a low table or behind a gate where the larger dog cannot fit. This is crucial for when the small dog gets tired of being stepped on. You should also teach your dogs a reliable settle command. Using teach your dog a calm settle protocols will help keep the peace when the big dog gets too enthusiastic.

Understanding Size-Appropriate Interaction

The biggest rule is feeding them in separate rooms. Small Chihuahuas are notoriously defensive about food, and a three-pound dog attempting to fight a 130-pound Great Dane over a kibble is a recipe for disaster. Using proper Chihuahua feeding guidelines will help prevent resources from becoming a battlefield.

Each dog is different; some will become best friends immediately, while others will spend months ignoring each other. Just be patient and let the relationship develop without pushing them.

The relationship between Dexter and Pete serves as a reminder that friendship is not bound by size or breed. Dexter is a dog who is ENORMOUS, and yet he is willing to sacrifice his personal dignity just to keep a tiny puppy entertained. This patient behavior shows the true, gentle nature that many giant breeds possess.

So the next time you see an unlikely pair of friends on the internet, remember that dogs have a capacity for unconditional connection that humans are still trying to figure out.

My Chihuahua mix, Pumpkin, watched the video and then spent forty minutes barking at a piece of dropped celery. I assume he is planning his own viral debut, possibly with a moose.
