Here’s Why Your Chihuahua Pees The Bed…It’s Not What You Think

Cleaning up messes is an unavoidable part of pup parenting, but peeing the bed is something more often related to human children than fur babies. You can’t send your chihuahua to bed with a pair of pull-ups, and waiting for them to grow out of it won’t work either.

Whether your chihuahua is still a puppy or fully mature, you can’t compare a urine-soaked chihuahua bed to a toddler’s wet sheets. When a chihuahua pees the bed, potty training is rarely the issue. Here are the more likely reasons why your chihuahua pees the bed.

When They’re Asleep

For kids, wetting the bed at night is a normal part of growing up. Most kids grow out of it before their age hits the double digits, but that’s not the case for your chihuahua. If you find your chihuahua’s bed wet with urine after he wakes up, his young age likely has nothing do with it. Your first thought shouldn’t be about better potty training, it should be concern for his health.

Hormone Responsive Urinary Incontinence

The infection in their urinary tract makes it difficult to stop the flow of urine when they really need to go. Other Medical Issues

There are several medical conditions that can affect a chihuahua’s bladder control while they’re asleep. Possibilities include bladder stones, spinal cord injury, diabetes, and cognitive disorders. General incontinence, or the natural weakening of the urethral sphinchter, also becomes more common as chihuahuas age.

For many urinary-related medical issues, the problems are progressive. A chihuahua might slowly leak small amounts of urine for several nights before you realize what’s happening. After a few weeks, there’s potential for that small leak to get worse. Eventually, the chihuahua might empty his entire bladder without waking up. When They’re Awake
