Bobby Humphreys: The Giant Who Rescued 30 Chihuahuas

Bobby Humphreys is a big guy doing big things in rescue – for little dogs! The Big Guy Chihuahua Sanctuary is Bobby’s passion project.

He cares for and rehomes tiny Chihuahuas who have had rough beginnings or have special needs. So far, he’s rescued 30 Chihuahuas and continues to do so.

But just a few years ago if you had told Bobby that he’d be spending his days with a pack of teeny Chihuahuas, he might’ve called you crazy.

For years Bobby’s breed was Rottweilers. The beautiful, athletic dogs are more the type someone might guess a big, brawny guy like Bobby would love.

He never gave any thought to smaller breeds, and in fact, would grieve other guys he saw with pocket-sized pups!

I actually would poke fun at any of my guy friends to happened to date someone who owned a small dog. I had truly just never had given one a chance.

    – Bobby, on how he felt about Chihuahuas

    Bobby Humphreys: The Heartbroken Giant

Things changed slowly. It started when, after 17 years, his marriage came to an abrupt end. Bobby hadn’t seen it coming, and the suddenness with which it occurred made the pain worse.

The heartbreak was too much to bear, and Bobby considered ending his own life. But thanks to a friend who refused to let him go down that path, he made it through.

“I lost faith in humanity, got weak and I wanted to end it. One person above all, Connie, kept me on this planet. A true friend that was always there.

In fact, she wouldn’t leave me alone long enough to do what I wanted to do. She literally just wouldn’t go away no matter how much I told her to. She had lost friends to that before and wasn’t going to lose me.

“My friend, Connie, had shown me what friendship really meant. No matter what I needed, she was there for me. Needless to say, I feel I owe to her quite a bit.”

    Falling in Love with Chihuahuas

One day Connie asked Bobby for a favor. She was moving and would not be able to take her dog: a Chihuahua named Lady who was known to be unfriendly. Bobby had already met Lady and was not a fan.

Seeing Lady at friends’ cookouts and listening to stories from Connie and numerous others, Lady was not exactly somebody I wanted to be near. Connie admitted that she was very protective of both her and her son, and that she didn’t really like people. Especially men. So, honestly, I just steered clear of her until this point.

Now, to make matters worse, Lady, is what she would say, a little off. Lady apparently decided one day to eat [Connie’s son’s] chemotherapy medicine … Somehow, amazingly, Lady survived. However, she wasn’t quite right after that… She’s a little lumpy, a little off, just not quite right.

    – Bobby, on his friends’ Chihuahua

Because Connie had been such a good friend, Bobby agreed to take Lady in. He figured he and his new roommate would do their best to steer clear of each other to make their new arrangement work.

Connie dropped Lady off while Bobby was at work, and when he got home she was sat in her kennel quietly under the TV.

Bobby decided to risk getting bitten by letting Lady out, and when Connie got there later to see how they were getting along, Lady was in Bobby’s lap, watching TV like they were old friends!

[Connie] swore she’s never seen anything like this, this dog hates everybody. Lady and I have been literally inseparable ever since.

Bobby was still wrestling with the pain of his sudden separation, but Lady helped put together the pieces of his broken heart.

I was still struggling to come to grips with everything. There were many days I could not even get up and go to work. Weeks turned into months and the only thing that made me happy was spending time with Lady. I cannot believe how this little 7 pound beautiful baby stole my heart.

    – Bobby, on how Lady the Chi helped with his heartbreak

But one day he remembered that Lady wasn’t actually his dog and would go back to living with Connie and her son when the time came.

So I set out to find myself my own Lady. I have some childhood memories of my grandfather’s Minpin named Lucy that I also was very partial to. I either wanted to find somebody that looked like Lady or find somebody that looks like Lucy.

    – Bobby, on what he first aimed for when starting the sanctuary

Bobby’s first find was a brown and tan dog named Kira. His first tiny pup. She was living in less-than-perfect conditions, in a home where the floor was caked in mud due to the poor construction, and she was aggressive, untrained and undisciplined.

Upon meeting her I was very confident that she would like me because, of course, Lady, who hates everybody loved me. Boy was I wrong. I got to see firsthand the fury of a Chihuahua! This puppy tried to take my hand off literally. She wouldn’t get near me she barked and growled.

    – Bobby, on the hardships of taking care of Chihuahuas

Bobby was worried that she would greet other prospective adopters the same way and that no one would want to give her a good home because of her attitude.

To save her, Bobby agreed to take her hoping she’d come around. By the end of their ride to her new home, she was already cuddling with Bobby while he drove.

    How Bobby Rescued 30 Chihuahuas

However, Bobby wanted a dog he could raise from puppyhood, and Kira was older than he had hoped, so his search continued. He found his next pup, Harley, on Puppy Finder, but quickly realized that something was amiss when he went to pick her up.

Bobby was told that Harley was from an unexpected litter after the owner had decided to stop breeding their dogs, but one of the children in the house let slip that a male pup from a previous litter was being inbred with the mother for more pups.

I started to see a pattern here. So many of these little beautiful babies are being abused or taken advantage of and I just couldn’t sit by and watch it happen. This is why I went back to get Quinny the next day.

    – Bobby, on what drives him to rescue Chihuahuas

The inbreeding caused the two pups, Harley and Quinn, whom Bobby calls “the twins,” to be very fragile. Though Bobby had been doing good for these dogs and they comforted him, he was still hurting.

The birthday he had that year was particularly tough, and to avoid looking at social media he decided to scroll through Craigslist instead.

That’s where he found Lucy – who happened to be the same color and have the same name and his grandfather’s MinPin from years before.

Lucy’s owner seemed desperate to rehome her. Bobby asked her to hold on to Lucy for just a few days, but the owner insisted he come that day – his birthday – because it was urgent.

She even offered to lower the rehoming fee. Bobby made a five-hour drive to meet the little dog and hear her story.

Lucy had been found wandering near a trailer park just a few days before. When the woman found her she knocked on trailer doors until she found Lucy’s previous owner, who told her, “I don’t want that thing, I’m done with it!”

From what she gathered from the man, neighbors, and an emergency vet, Lucy had been a bait dog, used to train fighting dogs to be more vicious.

Lucy was covered in teeth marks, had broken bones, was starved, and terrified of people and other dogs. Still, while Bobby was visiting, she crawled into his lap, and he knew she was his.

During the ride home on a dark highway, she puts Bobby’s dedication to a real test. When he stopped for gas, she hopped out of his car and ran. She sprinted on a busy highway, and Bobby knew that oncoming traffic wouldn’t be able to see her until it was too late.

I am now in the second lane of traffic chasing her down a dark highway at 9 o’clock at night. I knew there was literally no way they could see me until last second, let alone a little 4 pound black dog in the dark. Made the decision to stay in that lane in hopes they’d see me since they’d barrel right over her without seeing.

I am thinking to myself, ‘oh god, this is it. I’m going to die in the middle of a four lane highway.’ Luckily, I was able to gain on her due to her prior injuries and run her down. When I got within 5 feet of her she collapsed, curled up into a ball and buried her head between her legs. It was at that moment I understood what a bait dog was. I froze. The trailer went by blaring it’s horn and the wind sheer about knocked me over.

    – Bobby, on the horrors he experienced when rescuing one of his Chihuahuas

    Bobby Humphreys Chihuahua Sanctuary

“I was able to grab her and get her off the road and bring her back to the car. I filled up my gas and left the station, but I had to pull over as soon as the adrenaline stopped pumping. I sat there and literally cried for over five minutes.

I held her so tight. The only thing this poor girl knows is survival. She knows that if she can get loose she must run for her life and when she can’t run any longer she simply collapses and accepts her fate. I can imagine the life she must’ve led.

“She made me realize just how sick and cruel humans could be. She gave me a cause.

“I had at that point realized it felt better to save a dog from a bad situation than find the perfect-looking little dog. That’s kind of how my pets spiraled out of control and to having as many as seven or eight. Almost all of these came from bad situations. It seemed like the right thing to do.”

Since then, Bobby has taken in several other dogs who hardly had a chance. ThatGeorgie, who had many health issues and lost his eyes due to neglect. Chi Chi, who came from abuse with heartworms and a herniated disc in her neck.

Nugget, who was born with deformed front limbs and has difficulty getting around on her own. And many, many more.

We rescue Chihuahuas who are living horrible lives, abused, starving, disabled, mental issues, etc. And give them either a forever home with us where they will never have to experience neglect or anything like that again, or we nurse them back to health and adopt them out! We just want to help as many babies as we can.

Bobby’s big heart has room for every Chi in need, but rescue is not without it’s challenges. Since word has gotten out about Big Guy Littles World Sanctuary pleas for help have been pouring in.

His rescue is mostly self-funded from the jobs he takes doing high-end custom flooring. However, with so many special needs dogs requiring his time and care, he’s had less time to work on his craft.

“The biggest challenge honestly has been financial.”

Bobby, on the challenges of maintaining the sanctuary

But money won’t stand between him and showing love to dogs who have never had it before. Bobby currently has around 35 dogs in his care but expects to have about 40 by next week. Some of the dogs have since found happy homes elsewhere.

Alos passed knowing they were loved for at least a little while. Some will spend the rest of their lives in Bobby’s care. There may not be any money in it, but he says the return is even better.

    Wrapping Up

When asked what’s the most rewarding part, Bobby said that’s the simplest answer yet.

You’ve seen the videos. I have 34 current reasons that make every bit of stress and hardship worth it. There’s not a single one I can’t pick up and get the love and affection from that doesn’t change my day for the better.

    – Bobby Humphreys

For Bobby, the rewards of seeing transformed lives outweigh the hardships. His mission is clear: save Chihuahuas from despair and give them a chance at a better life.

The Big Guy Chihuahua Sanctuary stands as a testament to Bobby’s compassion and the enduring power of love for these little dogs.

3 Tips To Getting Your Chihuahua To Come When Called

Having a solid recall is something all dog owners want. It saves time, frustration and can even save your Chihuahua’s life if they are headed toward danger. But it’s also one of the hardest behaviors to teach because we can accidentally make mistakes that poison our own training. If you are having trouble, try these 3 secrets to getting your Chihuahua to come when called.

#1 – Don’t Call Your Chihuahua For Something He Hates

Dogs learn by association. So if you call your Chihuahua to you every time you need to do something he hates, such as a bath or nail trim, he will associate coming when called with negative things and not want to come to you. To not ruin your “come” cue, it’s better to go get your Chihuahua in these instances. And definitely never call him to you if you’re going to punish him.

    #2 – Get Low & Act Excited

You are a big person compared to your little Chihuahua. Sometimes, getting low and acting excited can make your dog more likely to come to you. If he doesn’t immediately come running after you have said your cue, try crouching down with arms open and a relaxed, happy face. Most dogs will be much more likely to come to a person in this position than one who is standing up straight in a “serious” posture.

    #3 – Disappear

No matter how independent your Chihuahua seems, she really does want you around. If she didn’t respond to that “come” cue, find a place to hide. Behind a bush, a tree, or inside the house—anywhere your dog can’t see your work. Chances are, as soon as she realizes she can’t see you, she will look for you. When your Chihuahua finds you, remember to praise her and be happy!

  • 3 Things All Chihuahua Owners Must Know

3 Things All Chihuahua Owners Must Know

Chihuahuas are extremely popular. They are all the fun of a bigger dog rolled up into a portable package! That’s why there are some things all Chihuahua owners should know and be careful of.

When our ancestors were breeding to get these tiny canines, some problems came along for the ride. These are the most common ones, whether for short or long-haired Chihuahua breeds.

From the vet: 3 common pup issues for Chihuahua owners

    Issues for New Chihuahua Owners

Every breed has its issues. These are known as breed-associated disorders. However, Chihuahuas are no different. All owners know that many of their problems came along with their specific Chihuahua dos and don ts.

Moreover, very few of these types of issues are exclusive to a single breed. So, three things all Chihuahua owners must know – present both in adults and Chihuahua puppies — are as follows:

    Hydrocephalus

Chihuahuas have a very noticeable face and head, as you have probably noticed on every Beverly Hills Chihuahua ad. Some Chihuahua owners refer to them as “apple head Chihuahuas”, but what seems really cute and infantile can be a problem.

Hydrocephalus, literally water on the brain, is a problem seen often in long-haired Chihuahua breeds. The hydrocephalus condition occurs when there is cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the skull, putting pressure on the brain and associated structures.

The large head can be a sign that there are abnormalities associated with the normal circulation of CSF. This allows it to build up in abnormal ways, increasing intracranial pressure.

    Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is a disease characterized by infected and loose teeth and foul breath. Eventually, the teeth become loose and fall out. You might not think that your dog cares about her smile, but most certainly she cares about how bad those teeth hurt while they loosen, erodes the jaw bone, and finally fall out.

Chihuahuas in my practice seem to usually have bad teeth and adults are often already missing some by the time I see them. If you have a puppy, ask your veterinary professional to show you how to keep the teeth healthy for life. It doesn’t matter if you have a short or long-haired Chihuahua.

You should make sure that you always have the preventive dentistry recommended by your veterinarian. For Chihuahua puppies, this will include regular dental cleanings under anesthesia and a comprehensive at-home program.

    Patellar Luxation

The patella is actually the “knee cap”, but a dog’s knees aren’t quite like ours. Because of the build of their legs, their knees seem to be higher on their legs than a human’s.

A patella should reside in the center of the leg and normally stays in place inside a groove on the femur. In some Chihuahua puppies, the groove seems to be more shallow and allows the patella to slip out of place, a condition we call patellar luxation.

There are probably other factors that contribute to this issue, but patellar luxation is a breed-associated disorder for toy breeds. Your veterinarian can examine your dog and characterize the type of luxation, as well as provide you with advice on how to manage the problem. Left untreated, patellar luxation can lead to crippling osteoarthritis.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua is not the only breed associated with these disorders. So, the best course of action is always to have a good relationship with your veterinarian.

If you’re like us Chihuahua owners, you know that they’re fun and can be very long-lived, especially if you have a good partnership with your veterinary team because, after you, they are the experts on your specific funny Chihuahuas.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Chihuahua lovers and owners club often have many questions related to Chihuahuas, with the most common ones being:

    Do Chihuahuas recognize their owners?

Yes, Chihuahuas are known to be loyal and form strong bonds with their owners. They can recognize and differentiate their owners from others through scent, voice, and familiarity. Their affectionate nature and close bond contribute to their recognition and attachment to their human companions.

Are Chihuahuas very protective of their owners?

Yes, Chihuahuas can exhibit protective behavior towards their owners, despite their small size. They have a strong bond with their owners and may become vocal, alert, or even aggressive in an attempt to protect them from perceived threats. However, the level of protectiveness can vary between individual Chihuahuas, with some being more protective than others.

  • Improve Your Chihuahua’s Skin & Coat With This One Simple Hack

Improve Your Chihuahua’s Skin & Coat With This One Simple Hack

So many dog breeds have health concerns – some minor, some major. Many chihuahua owners struggle with skin and coat issues. Coats can become dull and thin, and some chihuahuas are constantly scratching or biting at their skin.

What to do about dull coats and skin problems in chihuahuas

On a recent visit to my vet, I asked if there were something I could do to help, and the vet asked if I gave the dogs an Omega supplement. I explained that I gave the dogs a high-quality dog kibble that claimed to have a balance of nutrients, including Omega-3 fatty acids.

This is where I learned my first mistake.

My vet explained how dog food, even though it claims to contain Omega-3, rarely has any fatty acids that are biologically available to dogs. Biologically available? I had to have my vet expand on that one. Apparently, when dog food is processed, it is exposed to high heat. Omega fatty acids just so happen to be very sensitive to high heat. So by the time you pour Fido a bowl of kibble, the essential fatty acids are no longer in a state that is beneficial to your dog. In addition to dry, itchy skin and unhealthy coats, I was told that Omega-3 deficient diets also lead to:

    • Prolonged healing of wounds
    • Increased allergic reaction effects
    • Decreased immune system function
    • Painful joints
    • Excessive inflammation
    • Hair loss
    • Ear infections
    • Hot spots
    • Excessive itching

Fortunately, my vet offered a solution. She recommended that I start my dogs on an Omega-3 fatty acid supplement. Sounds easy? Not so much.

I also learned that all supplements are not created equal. The ingredients that are used to derive the fatty acids are key. I think most people know that salmon is high in Omega-3’s, but did you know that it’s also high in toxins, such as lead and mercury?

Chihuahua, Dog, Small Dog, Cute, Small, Pet, Fur

    Big Fish = Big Trouble

Here’s how it works: large fish are typically higher up on the food chain, so they eat small fish, which each small fish, etc. So basically, the largest fish are consuming all of the toxins that smaller fish eat. They also have a longer lifespan, so this means they accumulate even more bad stuff.

So the key is to start at the lowest point on the food chain. Anchovies! Small fish with a short lifespan. There’s some solid scientific research that confirms this. Bonus: anchovies have some of the highest Omega-3 contents of any fish. Added bonus: they’re low in toxins.

The Good News. There’s a Solution!

I was recently turned on to an amazing product called Omega-3 Select chews. They are made from the highest quality anchovies (and krill), designed to provide your pup with the perfect balance of essential oils. Plus, they’re available in small and large chews depending on your dog’s size.

Within a few weeks of having my dogs take the chews, I began noticing that they weren’t itching as much and their coats looked shiny and healthy. These were just the benefits that I could see.

The Right Omega Makes All the Difference

So do yourself a favor…get your dog on an Omega-3 supplement. My dogs seem to love the taste of the Omega-3 Select chews. Plus, when you purchase Omega-3 Select chews, you also be providing up to 21 meals for shelter dogs. So talk to your vet. To friends. Find what’s best for your dogs. Just make sure you make an Omega-3 supplement part of your chihuahua’s daily diet. Their lives are short enough, we think they deserve the best we can give!

  • 4 Things To Do When Your Chihuahua Is Stressed

4 Things To Do When Your Chihuahua Is Stressed

Chihuahuas are pretty good at letting you know what kind of mood they are in, so if you have some basic dog body language skills, you probably know when yours is upset about something.

Once you know that, however, the next step is knowing that to do. How you react to your Chihuahua when she reacts is very important. The following are four things to when your Chihuahua is stressed.

    #1 – Find The Trigger

First and foremost, you must figure out what is causing your Chihuahua to be anxious, afraid, or stressed. Sometimes it’s obvious – he’s lunging and barking on his lead at the dog across the street – it’s a good bet it’s the dog. But other times, it may not be as obvious.

Pay attention to your dog’s body language to give you clues. Is your Chihuahua staring at anything? Running or cowering in the opposite direction of someone or something? Acting hyper-vigilant (looking everywhere frantically – this may indicate it’s the environment that has him stressed), etc. If you can’t figure it out, have a professional dog trainer help you.

    #2 – Remove the Trigger

At the beginning, you need to just remove the trigger for the well-being of your dog. The more your Chihuahua is exposed to it, the more stressed he will become. So once you know what the trigger is, avoid it as much as possible until you have a plan to get him over his fears the correct way.

    Chihuahua, Flowers, Sweet, Summer, Spring

#3 – Don’t Force Your Chihuahua To Confront Her Fears

Many times, people think, “If I force her to the object she fears, she will see it’s fine and not be afraid anymore.” Dogs don’t work that way. If you force your Chihuahua into a situation that stresses her, it can escalate to the point where she becomes fear aggressive. She may redirect on you, or attack the object/person/dog that is causing his response.

    #4 – Train Him

The only way to help your Chihuahua is to use training to overcome his fears. There are many ways of doing of this and what technique you use will depend on the trigger, your dog and you – choose the method that works best for the situation. Definitely get the help of a professional trainer that has experience overcoming fear using positive methods. Correction will only make your dog fear the situation or thing more.

Tiny Chihuahua K9 Joins Ohio Police Force

Police in Marblehead, Ohio, has welcomed an unusual K9 into their department. Police work isn’t limited to any one breed, but light as a feather, Zorro isn’t taking down perps any time soon.

Still, he has an important job around the Marblehead Police Department, and his fellow officers are thankful for him!

Police Chief Casey Joy tells WCPO Cincinnati that he felt moved to adopt a dog after learning that many were homeless after Hurricane Florence.

The family already has another dog, who detects seizures for the police chief’s son.

They brought Zorro, a 4-month-old Chihuahua mix home, and he has made a positive impact not only on the family but on the community as well!

    Source: Marblehead Police FB

Zorro was sworn in as a mascot and reserve officer for the Marblehead Police Department shortly after his adoption.

For now, his duties include riding along with Chief Joy on patrols and lifting spirits wherever he goes! He wears his very own uniform, which was donated by a Marblehead business owner and is just his size. Like any good dog, he gives both police and public a reason to smile and relax.

“He makes everyone that comes into the police department a much happier person than when they came in – generally – and just bring positivity to the residents that we serve.”

Chief Joy hopes that Zorro will someday be able to spread more happiness as a therapy dog. The plan is to visit nursing homes, hospitals, and other places together in the future, once Zorro has completed his training.

  • Top 3 Cues To Teach Your Chihuahua

Top 3 Cues To Teach Your Chihuahua

When it comes to training your Chihuahua, it’s really up to you to decide what you want to teach him. Most likely, it will depend on whether you just want a nice family pet or a performance Chihuahua. If you are looking for just a nice family pet, you may not care too much if your Chihuahua even knows the basics – and that’s fine. However, there are a few behaviors all dogs should learn for safety reasons. The following are the top 3 cues to teach your Chihuahua to keep her safe.

    #1 – Come

A solid recall is important for your Chihuahua if he is ever off-leash in public areas (that are enclosed and where it’s allowed!) or even to avoid a headache in the backyard or house. In addition, it can save the life of your Chihuahua if she bolts out the door toward the street. It’s just a good basic cue for any dog to know.

    #2 – Leave It

Leave It is a great cue for your Chihuahua to know for a few reasons. One, it can keep them from chewing your shoe or stealing your chicken. Two, it can keep your Chihuahua from investigating every scent on a walk or even reacting to dogs and people (though this takes a fair amount of training). Third, and most importantly, it can save your Chihuahua’s life if he is about to eat something dangerous – this includes toxic human foods or something unsafe he comes upon during his walk.

    #3 – Stay

Chihuahuas are terriers and definitely like to chase things. Like Come, it can help keep your Chihuahua inside the house when you open the front door. Stay is also useful if you are trying to get your Chihuahua to not chase the neighbor’s cat or the bunny that pops out of nowhere. Finally, it helps teach your Chihuahua self-control, which is never a bad thing.
